Biography
Satomi Kawai was born in Wakayama, Japan where she learned that women’s virtues were modesty, obedience, and harmonizing to their families. She moved to Iowa City, Iowa in 1999 to pursue an MFA at the University of Iowa. She graduated in 2006 and continued to live in Iowa City where she worked as an artist and Zumba instructor. Through her art, Kawai interrogated what it means to be a woman in personal and environmental contexts. She specialized in wearable art and incorporated metalsmithing, printing, stitching, and felting into her practice. In 2018, Kawai embarked on the Women:Hood Project in which she interviewed women from diverse contexts about their experiences of womanhood and both created and invited responsive artworks.
