Biography
Sayuri Sasaki was born in Japan in the early 1980s. During her childhood, Sasaki’s parents moved frequently for work. Her primary and secondary education were spread across multiple continents including three years in Australia, three years in Romania, and several more years in Japanese cities. Feeling too far removed from the mainstream of Japanese education, Sasaki decided to pursue an undergraduate degree in the United States, earning her BA in Studio Arts in 2003 from Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon.
Sasaki moved back to Japan after completing her studies in the United States. She worked for three years as a television set designer and prop master for Asahi Broadcasting Corporation in Osaka. In 2009, Sasaki returned to the United States and married her husband, Brien Hemann. The couple lived in Portland while Sayuri earned enough money to begin her studio, Sayuri’s World, in 2012. Hemann’s works spanned multiple disciplines including textiles, sculpture, and painting. Works from her studio, notably her Urban Aquarium project, have been displayed in both the United States and internationally.
