Scope and Contents In 1971, Finlay sends letters to Michael Harvey, Udo Breger, and bp Nichol (Nichol letter not in Archive) asking assistance in publishing A Boy's Alphabet Book based upon photographs of his toy airplane, glider and ship models to be accompanied by a poem for each letter of the alphabet. He selects Diane Tammes as the photographer for this project and 3 of her b&w photographs are included in this Archive. Nichol replies in June 1973 that Coach House Press may be interested in publishing the book. Nichol replies to Finlay in July 1973 indicating that plans for publishing the book by Coach House Press are still progresing. Finlay replies that he is still looking for a photographer to do the images and brings up the Fulcrum Press legal battle. Nichol acknowledges receipt of the manuscript and photographs (Dave Paterson) in Nov 1974. Finlay replies that he is pleased with its acceptance. Scope and Contents SMS Emden was a light cruiser of the German navy. Its raiding cruise in late 1914 was one of the most romanticised and notable incidents of World War I. In the second half of 1914 Emden raided Allied shipping in the Indian Ocean, sinking or capturing thirty Allied merchant vessels and warships before being run aground by its captain to prevent it from sinking, after engaging HMAS Sydney at the Battle of Cocos. By now no fewer than sixty Allied warships were combing the waters of the Indian Ocean in search of Emden. A critical part of ship-to-ship communication by wireless in the Indian Ocean was the British communications station at Direction Island in the Cocos (Keeling) Islands. Captain von Müller of the Emden decided to send a landing party ashore to destroy the station's radio tower and equipment. Emden reached Direction Island on November 9, 1914. Fifty seamen with rifles and machine guns were sent ashore but the British civilians did not resist and the Emden landing party...

Scope and Contents

In Oct 1973, Harvey writes to Finlay with descriptions of proposals for the Portsmith City Art Project, viz., Water's & Sky's Hours and Numbered Sails. He also sends Finlay drawings which are cataloged separately in the Sackner Archive. Finlay replied within a week with minor modifications prior to their submission into the competition. He adds a note of encouragement to Harvey, "So the question is, who will get the Third Prize (As we have won the First and Second)." -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.

Scope and Contents

The Archive consists of drawings of highly stylized images of boats on papercard with typed captions pasted to the papercard support. A sheet of translucent paper stapled to the papercard has ink-drawn additions to the boats and handwritten instructions to the printer. One drawing of swatches of colored inks, provides the color key for the ink drawings. Two red colored papers are also provided as color guides. Handwritten and typed instructions for layout appear on stapled pages. -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.
