Houedard in his introduction states that this is the first lecture (concrete poetry) delivered in the English speaking world. He presents an extensive critical analysis of Gomringer's poems including "Avenidas," "Silencio,"etc. and DeCampos poetry. Calligrammes were inspired by Mallarme's "Un Coup De Des" as well the music of Webern. This is the second edition of this book which is accompanied by five drawings. Sixteen copies of the drawings were editioned, six to collaborators and nine for sale, e.g., one of the latter held by the Sackner Archive. The book was first published in 1987 without the drawings.
