This is an unfavorable review of Tom Phillips' exhibition at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford England. The Sackners attended this exhibition entitled "A micro-retrospective." The critic found fault with the artistic merits of A Humument "...the abstract designs do not particularly excite us, the combination of colours do not strike as particularly inspired, the philosophical tags strike us as just a mite pretentious." Tom Phillips reviews the exhibition and the catalogue "The Museum of the Mind" at the British Museum organized by John Mack. Phillips describes the artifacts ranging from prehistoric to 2001 as "reminders of the importance of the aesthetic; memory is most efficient assisted by artefacts in which coherence is synonymous with beauty...These leaps of time and space and subject sketch a network of associations that builds for the visitor a microcosmic map of the museum as neatly schematic and graphically witty as the plan of the London Underground." -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.

[Sudoku Drawing] / Phillips, Tom., 2006
This print is modelled after the Japanese number game using colors for mathematical symbols. Sudoku, also known as Number Place or Nanpure, is a logic-based placement puzzle. The aim of the puzzle is to enter the digits 1 through 9 in each cell of a 9×9 grid made up of 3×3 subgrids (called "regions") so that each row, column, and region contains exactly one instance of each digit. A set of clues, or "givens", constrain the puzzle such that there is only one way to correctly fill in the remainder. Completed sudoku puzzles are a type of Latin square, with the additional constraint on the contents of individual regions. Leonhard Euler is sometimes cited as the source of the puzzle based on his work with Latin squares. -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.
