Take Art for the Heart / Phillips, Tom., 2010

 Item
Identifier: CC-54984-990391
Scope and Contents

This print was done for the British Heart Association's campaign, "Mending Broken Hearts" as part of their "Breath of Life" portfolio. As printed on the internet: Phillips' simple and elegant design shows six stages of a heart as it gradually becomes whole. He plays with the arrangement of the phrase "take art for the heart', placing it inside the heart shapes and reducing and simplifying it until there is nothing left. Phillips' work is often based around text; in this piece he surrounds his image with a poem, "The alchemy and potent balm of art/ may serve to heal the metaphoric heart/but for the real blood-pumping thing it takes/all medicine to mend it when it breaks'. A testament to the transformative power of art on the human soul. -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.
