The drawing is dominated by the listing of four silkscreened words listed from top to bottom, viz., Norther, Easter, Wester and Souther. Wide colored lines in a meandering fashion like unwound, tangled tape from a casette cross, encircle and go under the four directional words. The caption below these words reads, Regional News: one line the shortest distance between two points bing the prettiest. In an introductory essay, Mary Ellen Solt traces concrete poetry historically and analyzes spcifically the work of Lax as related to Eugen Gomringer, Augusto De Campos and Ian Hamilton Finlay. Michael Basinski and Robert Bertholf provide an essay on "Zines," a generic term for a self-generated, cheaply produced (folded and stapled photocopied sheets), radically independent magazine. Rowden (Bronowski's) Cottage, Nailsworth / Furnival, John., 1994
This print is part of the Nailsworth series and depicts Bronowski, a famous art-populariser in the fifties, who as a Polish Jew escaped from the Nazis; he worked as a scientist in England. Caption for a line drawing of Sam Palmer (identity?) lying on Salisbury Plain (Stonehedge) in the night and "cogitating whether the moon is Fulvous (tawny), Gibbous (whether the moon is more than half full) or Fulgurant (flashing like lightening). The print on translucent paper lists a circular stream of words, printed in different colors, that relate to celestial bodies. These float over the second print that depicts a large silver globe with latitude and longitude lines. Disintegrating silver capital "V's and other letterforms on the outer border of the globe provide an visual effect that it is spinning. The calligraphic text at the bottom of the work reads, "Shakespeare, his maze, His Queen, the Lord Southampton, & the dark lady, with the gestures of Rhetorick." Each of the above mentioned is pictured in the print. Several of these elements are present in the drawing on wooden board held in the Sackner Archive. Shakespeare, His Maze / Furnival, John., 1978
The maze is composed of large letters in which the Lord of Southampton, the dark lady and the Queen are standing. A portrait of Shakespeare is drawn within a pyramid. Beneath that is an alphabet of hand signs. The imagery is taken from the drawing, "The Dark Lady" that is held by the Sackner Archive.
