From the Collection:
This collection contains many thousands of individual fanzines and pieces of fanzines, amassed by Horvat over the decades. The fanzines in the collection deal mostly with science fiction and related subjects, although there are zines on other genre topics, such as mysteries. The collection chronicles the evolution, growth and development of science fiction fandom from its early organization in the 1920s through the various iterations of fandom that occurred over the subsequent decades. Together the materials in the Horvat collection document the history of SF fandom over the course of its first century of life.

Scope and Contents
From the Collection:
This collection is made up of printer's ephemera sent to Special Collections and Archives by private presses through the years and continuing. It is comprised of, among other things, prospectuses, samples, job work, posters, keepsakes, announcements, correspondence, and greeting cards.
The collection is organized alphabetically by press. “See also” notes are utilized in file names to help navigate individuals versus the presses they work with. Press files that include an artist’s personal works, or their other unaffiliated works, include the artist’s name in the title. Prospectuses [prospecti] and announcements of books that are cataloged in Special Collections are noted with call numbers in ‘related materials.’ Presses with other manuscript collections at Iowa have also been noted. Many presses also have cataloged ephemera not listed here in this finding aid, searchable in Infohawk+.

These papers were gathered by Oscar Hahn during his tenure at the University of Iowa. He donated them to the University when he retired in 2008.This collection consists of three series. The first of these is comprised of compositions by Hahn, listed by the name of the poem or essay, followed by the publication in which it appeared. The second series is comprised of materials about Hahn. This includes newspaper and magazine clippings, which mostly contain criticism, reviews, and interviews, but also includes personal interest stories, announcements of readings, posters, conference schedules and the like. It also includes printouts of web pages. These ephemeral items are so numerous, and in many cases, so short, that the decision was made not to include them in the finding aid; however, interviews and criticism appearing in trade journals were photocopied and these are included in the finding aid. Series I and II are arranged chronologically. The third series is...

For many years the Libraries removed and discarded dust jackets as books were processed into the collections, although since the 1990s jackets have remained with the books and allowed to circulate. Over time, the jackets tend to become worn and tattered, although many remain in surprisingly pristine condition for decades.
Since the dust jackets on books related to Dada often illustrate or illuminate the subject or thesis of the book, a decision was made around 2000 to retain the jackets permanently in a collection separate from the books themselves. This collection was originally arranged in order by the call number assigned to the book. However, as the collection was added to, and finally completed in 2017, it was decided that each box would be alphabetized by title for easier patron browsing. It notes only the title -- not publisher, place of publication, call number, or date, all information that can be found in the InfoHawk record.
