Materials Specific Details

In the late 19th and early 20th century, artisans at Hayle Mill made a wide range of thin currency bond and other security papers containing highly detailed (and therefore hard to counterfeit) watermarks. They are excellent examples of skill in rag selection, beating, watermarking, sheetforming, couching, paper drying and, very likely, gelatin sizing. These watermarks were traded to Tim Barrett by Remy Green in exchange for a copy of the then recently published Bird and Bull book, Nagashizuki- the Japanese Craft of Hand Papermaking.
