Materials Specific Details

Four cookbooks belonging to the McQueen family. All four in the same box.

Two appear to be from the area of Glasgow in Scotland and two appear to be American. The ones from the mid-twentieth century belonged to Helen McQueen, who was born January 7, 1910 in Passaic, New Jersey. She lived in East Dennis, Massachusetts. She died in Hyannis, Massachusetts in 1993. Her parents moved to the United States from Scotland.

Some of the cookbooks from Glasgow may have belonged to her grandmother, Catherine Anderson Rankin or to her aunt, Catherine Bremner McQueen. It is also possible that the Scottish cook books came from Helen's mother's grandparents, who also lived in Glasgow. The recipes are mostly for sweets, with some preserving recipes included.

1. 1869-Includes almanac pages from 1869 in Glasgow, and newspaper clippings, mostly household related, one back includes personals ads. 2. 1887- Includes recipe from which date is taken, for 2 Ulster coats from James Fielding, Mantle Manufacturer & Importer in Glosgow, also includes many cards for a Annual Praise Service at the First Presbyterian Church 3. Early 1900's- Mostly sweets, some recipe cards laid in. 4. 1960's Many laid in magzine/ newspaper clippings, including the New York Times. Also with this item: printed emails from the donor, with some more background, and a small family tree of the McQueen Family.
