Scope and Contents From the Collection: The David Cole Papers collects mail and book art materials from visual artist David Cole (1939-2000). This collection is made up of four series: MAIL ART, CORRESPONDENCE, PUBLICATIONS, and ARTISTS BOOKS, ART OBJECTS, & STAMPS. Due to the nature of mail art, the MAIL ART series contains what would typically be categorized as correspondence. Materials in this series includes mail art organizations' newsletters and publications, exhibit ephemera, mailing lists, and 25 of Cole's scrapbook binders, which have been deconstructed for preservation purposes. This series has file-level indexes of artists. Also included in this series are cassettes, often containing spoken word art, sent to Cole by others. Any correspondence that does not include illustrations, creative writing, specialty stamps, or other artistic material is in the CORRESPONDENCE series.
