Laird C. Addis (1937-2018) was a member of the Department of Philosophy at the University of Iowa from 1964-2004 holding various positions within the department including department chair. Born in Bath, New York he would eventually receive his B.A. from the University of Iowa, his M.A. from Brown University, and a PhD from the University of Iowa, all in philosophy. A student of Gustav Bergmann, a notable philosopher and Iowa emeritus, Addis taught philosophy on a variety of subjects and wrote several books including “Of Mind and Music” which combined Addis’ academic interests of music and philosophy. After retiring he continued to teach at the University of Iowa Senior College.
