Biographical / Historical

UI alum Glenn Eugene Thomas (1920-2017), a native of Logan, Iowa, served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. His tour of duty in Italy is recorded in a series of letters he wrote to his fiancee, Joann Helene Hamilton; they were married on August 7, 1945, at the Logan Methodist Church following Glenn's honorable discharge at the rank of sergeant.

Glenn's lifelong career was in education, teaching English and, later, teaching to special needs students in several Iowa communities. Following the death of his first wife in 1975, he married Ruth Gaines of Davenport, a widow, in 1978. Following retirement from teaching, he volunteered in several community projects, including Habitat for Humanity in Davenport.
