Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The Judith Jongewaard Layne papers date from 1897 to 1995 and measure 5 linear inches. The papers are arranged into one series: biographical.

The Biographical series (1897-1995) includes memorabilia, photographs, correspondence, newspaper clippings, and other materials that Judith Jongewaard Layne saved throughout her lifetime, as well as some materials that her parents and daughters saved. Many of the photographs and memorabilia revolve around her childhood and high school years in Sioux Center, Iowa, and display her and her friends in the 1930s, as well as her in her musical and theatrical endeavors. All of Jongewaard's academic records from her twelve years of schooling in Sioux Center, Iowa are included within the series, as are her grade reports and memorabilia from her years at Santa Monica Junior College. Much of the correspondence included within the series revolves around Layne's life as a wife and mother in the 1950s and 1960s and are typically filled with details of the Layne family's life in order to update her family back home in Iowa. There are some outliers from the rest of the letters, however, such as a letter from 1918 that congratulates Jongewaard's mother for the birth of Judith Jongewaard. Also included in the series are some of Jongewaard's parents' papers, such as Dr. A. C. Jongewaard's patient call list from the years 1928 to 1929, and Anna Jongewaard's visitor notes from the years 1927 to 1936. There are also various miscellaneous materials within in the series, including Judith Layne's ration book from World War II, a map of Iowa from 1930, and Sioux County Agricultural Society cards from 1897.
