Scope and Contents
The Genevieve “Denny” Dudley papers date from 1969 to 2016 and measure 3.20 linear feet. The papers are arranged in five series: Biographical, Bell Labs Career, AT and T Career, Research Files, and Audiovisual. Most of the collection file names are based on the organization in which Dudley herself arranged it.
The Biographical series dates from 1969 to 2015 and includes materials related to Dudley’s personal life, beginning and overall career, and retirement. These documents include a career chronology and “photo wrap-up" prepared by Genevieve "Denny" Dudley (including original and drafts), daily calendars, resumes, an overview of performance appraisals, two retirement scrapbooks, and a report written by Dudley titled, “Summit Lay Committee on Education: The Role of the Volunteer in the Schools, 1969 May.”
The Bell Labs Career series dates from 1969 to 1985 and documents Dudley’s work life at Bell Laboratories mostly in the following positions: Volunteers in Action (VIA) Coordinator (1969-1976), Visitor Program Specialist (1969-1978), Employee Information Representative (1978-1979) and (1980-1981), Plans and Programs Representative (1979-1980), Group Supervisor for Employee Information Programs (1981-1982) and Group Supervisor, Bell Operating Liaison (1982-1983). The subcategory Writings and Editing by Genevieve "Denny" Dudley (1979-1981) includes her responsibilities as an Employee Information Representative and a Plans and Programs Representative. A large portion of her work included writings and articles with Bell Labs News and Perspective, a management newsletter edited by Denny Dudley.
The AT and T Career series dates from 1982 to 2012 (1982-1989 bulk) and is comprised of materials related to Dudley's career with AT and T Information Systems. Known as the “Bell System Breakup,” AT and T assumed the business of Bell Laboratories in 1984 after agreeing to divest company of all facilities used to provide telephone service. The collection describes Dudley’s multiple positions in public relations for AT and T including as District Manager for Public Relations (1983-1986) and her roles in Internal and Executive Communication, Business Marketing Group (1986-1989).
The Research Files series dates from 1969 to 2016 and mostly contains research files concerning Bell Labs and AT and T, miscellaneous references and notes, as well as various clippings and articles.
The Audiovisual series dates from 1972 to 2012 and includes two VHS tapes produced for Bell Laboratories and AT and T, three audio cassette tapes with interviews conducted by Dudley for Datavision with Vittorio Cassoni and Robert Kavner, another single audiocassette tape with Kenneth Clark and Harold Collier for VIA (Volunteers in Action) Night, a DVD with interviews by Genevieve "Denny" Dudley, and lastly, a CD titled “Oh of Denny Dudley” produced by Alice Kurtz and Mary Evans for Dudley’s retirement.
