Scope and Contents
The Minnie Schulz Long papers measure 3.5 linear inches and date from 1874 to 2006. The papers are divided into four series: Biographical, Long’s Grocery, Printed Materials, and Photographs.
The Biographical series (1874-2006, undated) includes correspondence, largely connected to insurance policies. This series also has materials relating to Long’s children, Virginia and Harry, such as paper dolls, Harry’s hunting license, and Virginia’s 2006 obituary. Other materials in the Biographical series include Long’s American National Red Cross member card, and bulletins from Oak Street Baptist Church, which she attended.
The Long’s Grocery series (1934-1948, undated) consists of materials related to the operation of Long’s Grocery in Burlington, Iowa, in the 1930s and 1940s. Advertisements, financial records such as receipts, and permits to sell cigarettes are in this series along with county relief materials. The Long’s Grocery series also includes a World War II ration stamp card and a permit issued to E.R. Weingartner, the previous owner of the business, to sell fuel oil.
The Printed Materials series (1922-1936, and undated) consists of miscellaneous materials of an uncertain relationship to Long and her family. Contents include a desk calendar from Clarke Shop Jewelry and Silverware in Chicago, an unused budget book, Rules of the Operating Department of the Chicago Union Station Company, a Lyon and Healy Christmas catalog featuring musical instruments, two travel brochures for Mexico, and two unused notebooks including one featuring collectable “Giant Clipper” stamps.
The Photographs series (1937, undated) includes several portraits and a few group photographs from the early twentieth century. Few of the photographs’ subjects are identified.
