Scope and Contents

The Mary Linder papers consist of one notebook, dated 1881 to 1885. It is inscribed 'Iowa City Academy', 'Notes on Geology and Zoology by Mary F Linder'. It contains a section on the classification of mollusks, including sketches, descriptions, and localities of specific shells found in or near Iowa. A second section contains notes on geology as a science, followed by a listing of classifications for animals, and notes on the geology of Iowa. The last three pages contain poetry on moral and religious themes.

Biographical / Historical

Mary F. Linder was born around 1862 to Antone and Katherine Linder, both from Prussia. She was the fourth of ten children, and their third daughter. They lived in Lucas, Iowa. Mary Linder married Thomas J. Fitzpatrick on August 26, 1896; eventually they moved to Fayette, Iowa. They had two children, Fred and Lilian. She worked as a college teacher.
