Biographical / Historical

Marjorie McNeil Huey was born in 1895 to Scott McNeil and Jane Blanch McNeil. One of four children, Huey lived and grew up in Clarence, Iowa. Around 1915, she graduated from Clarence High School at the age of 19 with six other classmates. She then taught in a county school not far from her home and later attended Coe College. While living and teaching in Lisbon, Iowa, she met and married a local farmer and former pupil, Forrest Huey. Because teachers were not allowed to marry, the two secretly wed in Independence, Iowa. Both Marjorie and Forrest Huey later served on the school board for Linn Township.

In 1923, Marjorie Huey gave birth to Janice Huey Hunter. Hunter attended The University of Iowa during World War II, graduating with a nursing degree in 1947. During her time at The University of Iowa, Janice met and later married another student, Walter Hunter. Marjorie Huey developed colon cancer in 1953 and survived for ten years until her death in 1963 at the age of 68.
