Biographical / Historical
LOVE is an acronym that stands for Lead, Overcome, Value, and Empower. The LOVE, Girls Magazine (LGM) started in 2012 by Jasmine Babers of Rock Island, Illinois as a nonprofit organization by and for girls. Babers graduated from Rock Island High School. She attended Western Illinois University for Marketing Management from 2014-2015 then later transferred to University of Chicago where she majored in Gender Women’s Studies and Political Science, graduating in December 2018.
LGM’s mission was to build self-esteem by providing young women leadership opportunities and a safe place to tell their stories. The idea for LGM began after Babers witnessed her friends being bullied online in high school. Her mother, Teresa Babers, suggested she use her editing and artistic skills to gather and share stories by and about young women. The magazine became a platform for girls to learn about the real-life struggles and successes of other girls that were around their age, 13-19. Over the first two years, the magazine expanded from Illinois and Iowa to Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi and Washington, D.C., reaching more than 5,000 girls. In 2014, Jasmine Babers was one of The Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes recipients. The prize honors 25 outstanding young leaders ages 8 to 18 who have made a significant positive difference to people and the planet.
