Biographical / Historical

Taylor Yocom graduated from University of Iowa with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2015. Beginning in Iowa City in 2014, Yocom took inspiration from her fellow classmates’ experiences as women and femme-presenting students on a college campus at night. She began to document the tools they used to protect and guard themselves in a series of black and white photographs. Continuing the project post-graduation, the resulting 2021 published photo-essay book Guarded includes poetry, vignettes, and photographs of students and their tools of protection.
