Biographical / Historical
Jun-Nicole Matsushita attended the University of Iowa from 1999 to 2006, earning a master’s in Health, Leisure, and Sports studies. During that time, Matsushita was an active member of the North American Society for Sports History and employed at the Iowa Women’s Archives. Matsushita presented multiple historical research papers on the intersections of women’s health, women and sports, and women’s clothing, particularly during the Victorian era.
In 2004, when the Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami occurred, Matsushita created the non-profit organization Help Us Give Slings (HUGS). HUGS raised funds to buy baby-wearing slings to donate to mothers that suffered natural disasters or were living in refugee camps, having donated over 3,000 slings. During that time, Matsushita became self-employed as a doula, starting the business Bamboo Birth Services.
