Scope and Contents

The Lisa Hannon papers date from 1847 to 2012 and measure 5 linear inches in 1 box. The records are arranged in two series: Biographical (1847-2012) and Writings (2001-2009).

The Biographical series (1847-2012) contains a complete Hannon family history, tracing the genealogy of Lisa Hannon’s maternal and paternal families with particular focus on the life and marriage of Hannon’s parents, Beverly A. Hannon and David L. Hannon. Correspondence between Hannon and her family and international friends, along with family photographs are also included.

The Writings series (2001-2009) hold Hannon’s blog entries on the early website Open Diary. These blog entries detail various aspects of Hannon’s life from dating horror stories to exploring spirituality through Buddhism. Comments from Hannon’s online friends and other Open Diary users are included. This series also holds Hannon’s short stories, essays, and poetry.

Biographical / Historical

Lisa Hannon was born September 24, 1962, to Beverly A. Hahesy Hannon and David L. Hannon, the oldest of six children. Beverly Hannon was an Iowa state senator for two-terms from 1985 to 1992 and helped form the Democratic Activist Women’s Network (DAWN). Lisa Hannon would later work with her mother on her campaigns and other political activism.

Hannon went to Iowa State University in 1981 for three years to study art before going to the Hawkeye Institute of Technology (now the Hawkeye Community College) for one year. Hannon graduated from Iowa State University with a bachelor’s in English. Hannon worked a large variety of jobs throughout the years starting with corn detasseling and other service jobs and then working as a legislative clerk in the Iowa state legislature before becoming a receptionist at Frank N. Magid Associates. In 1991, Hannon would join her sister in Japan to teach English for two years.

During her life, Hannon kept a blog on the early online diary website Open Diary. With this website, Hannon kept records of her daily life and interactions with friends and family. Her diary entries detail various aspects of Hannon’s personal life from dating stories to exploring various religions like Buddhism. Through this diary, Hannon made many online friends across the globe who she kept in contact with both online and offline through cards and letters.
