Biographical / Historical

The Iowa Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (IAIAW) was the state-level chapter of the national AIAW association, and oversaw women's athletic competitions among Iowa colleges and universities. According to a mission stastement, the organization was centered on athlete health and wellness and sought to ensure that intercollegiate athletic programs were "designed to meet the needs of women participants.” The IAIAW offered state championships and regional competitions in sports such as tennis, golf, and basketball. Nationally, the AIAW oversaw women’s college athletics from 1971 to 1983. After its dissolution in 1983, most of the AIAW's former member schools continued administering their women’s sports programs via the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
