Scope and Contents
An exact replica of the image of this poster held by the Sackner Archive can be found in "Die Grosse Utopie: Die Russische Avantgarde 1915-1932" Schirn Kunsthalle, Frankfurt, illustration number 124, documented on page 735, stating the poster is held by the Lenin-Bibliothek, Moscow. According to the citation in Ars Libri Catalogue 84, 1991, pp 33-34, the Lenin Library copy measures 53 x 70 cm. The Ars Libri offering measures 51 x 62 cm and Ars Libri believes that their copy might be considered a second state of the original lithograph. The Sackner copy measures 48 x 66 cm in paper size and 47 x 56 cm in image size. Neither of the citations on measurements indicate whether paper or image size are being reported. Finally, Stuart Wrede in the book "The Modern Poster," provides a black and white reproduction of the print (Figure 17, page 25) that he attributes as a facsimile measuring 49.5 x 71 cm in the Museum of Modern Art Library, NYC. However, communication with the library revealed that this poster is not held by them. Further investigation revealed that the smaller version might be a reproduction printed in East Berlin as part of a portfolio edited by Guiseppe Garritano, "Plakate der Russischen Revolution 1917-1929," gerhardt verlag, 1966. Another copy may be held by the Duke University Library. In the Alice Adam catalogue No.15 (1990-1991), there is a photographic reproduction and documentation of Lissitzky's "Beat the Whites with the Red Wedge." The image size of ~18 x ~22 inches is identical to the poster held by the Sackner Archive. However, there are differences in the cluster of forms in the upper right corner. The authenticity was documented by Eugene Kotvin, Curator of Prints, Russian Museum, Leningrad. Kotvin noted that there were two editions of the print with two different lithographic matrices produced in Unovis Workshop owing to the large numbers required. This explains the typographical differences among the posters. This reproduction is also in the Collection Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, The Netherlnds. Sotheby's offfered an original in Prints and Multiples 1017 measuring Lithograph printed in red and black, 1919-20, on off-white wove paper, published by UNOVIS, Vitebsk sheet: 51.5 by 63.0 cm. 20 1/4 by 24 3/4 in. -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.
