Internet: The Duke of Chou (twelfth century B.C.) is regarded as one of the greatest statesmen in Chinese history. Also known as the Yellow Emperor, he is considered to be the architect of the Chou dynasty and the true founder of the Confucian tradition. Confucius looked to the Duke for his model and believed it was his mission to reestablish the principles and culture of the early Chou era, considered to be a golden age. The Duke of Chou was a legendary figure whose life is surrounded in the mists of ancient history, though accounts of his personal life and achievements do remain. The Duke of Chou is credited with the writing of the I Ching and with the founding a new form of classical Chinese music. Some historians also credit him with the founding of traditional Chinese medicine. In addition, he was instrumental in the invention of the calendar and forms of martial arts that are beneficial for health as well as self-defense. His wife, Luo Zu, is said to have taught the Chinese to weave silk from the cocoon of domesticated silkworms. The Duke of Chou is said to have lived to be 100 years old. Of his 25 children, 14 were boys. All of the noble families of the first three dynasties of China are reputed to have been descendants of these sons. When the Duke's long life was over, he arranged his affairs with his ministers and prepared for his journey to heaven.
