Scope and Contents

This drawing relates to Marvin Sackner's seventieth birthday. The background appears to be a wall of a mosaic with tiny colored square elements in a whorling pattern. In its middle, the whorls form the number "70." The poem reads "M S - quaint merald art - bassy art, - sip and scan the names and the quaint arch of the tab - and the card from quaint artist near them - memory, turning seventy - with a muse of quaint treated news." In this poem, M S stands for Marvin Sackner. "quaint merald art" signifies either unusual in a pleasing way, messenger (merald = herald) of art or wise (archaic meaning of quaint) messenger of art. "bassy art" indicates low pitched art, i.e., not in the main stream. "sip and scan the names and the quaint arch of the tab" refers to perusing the catalogue of the Sackner Archive. "and the card from quaint artist near them" signifies the correspondence from Tom Phillips, the composer of the poem. "memory, turning seventy - with a muse of quaint treated news" is open to several interpretations including the reflection at 70 years of memory of the pages of "A Humument" or the part that Ruth, Marvin's wife played in establishing the Sackner Archive or the friendship of Tom Phillips with Marvin Sackner on his seventieth birthday. -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.
