Scope and Contents

This collection was offered for sale by d.a.levy's nephew Jim Levey through Jeff Maser who compiled an exceptional annotated bibliography. Kent State University was the recipient of this collection.Maser contributed the introduction: Provenance: Material in this collection comes from three sources-1. items from d.a. levy's apartment, collected by his brother, James after d.a.'s death; 2. the collection of James Levey and his wife Charlene; and, 3. the collection of d.a.'s parents, Joseph J. and Carolyn Levey. These three collections were later united by levy's niece, Sandy (via inheritance) who then left it to her brother, Jim Levey, on behalf of whom the collection is being offered here.Condition: The condition of all items in the collection is uniformly very near fine or better, with almost every item being in fine condition, with no foxing, or stains, or insecting, or other problems associated with paper being stored for long periods of time in an often wet and cold climate. Exceptions are noted, but there are really only a hand full. These books and papers were cherished by the family, and well-cared for in every instance.Highlights include:- Fair typescripts or carbon typescripts of over 125 early poems, most of which remain unpublished.- Two large text collections, "The Brother Book" and "The Concrete Book" assembled by levy chronicling his poetic development.- The original holograph manuscript of a most emblematic levy poem, "Lettre to Cleveland." - Thirty original paintings and drawings by levy, all unreproduced.- A long run of letters and cards to his immediate family, many from his time in the Navy.- An inscribed copy of painter Richard Allen Morris' first self-published book, the template and springboard for levy's own publishing career.- 112 of his own publishing efforts, including most of the rarest press items, several inscribed to family members, a half-dozen with original cover paintings.- A wealth of ephemeral material directly relating to levy's childhood, Naval enlistment, and poetic career.- Several rare and desirable early R. Crumb items, associated with the Cleveland scene.levy lead an itinerant life. Though he did not "travel" in the normal sense, he would often stay with friends and family members for short periods of time, or take month-to-month rentals. Occasional trips were made to the West, to Wisconsin, and to New York, but to Cleveland he always returned. Even when in and around the city, levy was in the habit of mailing books, papers, and manuscripts to his brother Jim, "for the files." Thanks to this habit, much of what would likely have gone missing was saved. Though there are two or three really good collections of levy's publications out there, I know of no other collection this deep in unpublished art and poetry, illuminating biographicalmaterials, and other works evocative of levy's life and times. -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.
