Scope and Contents

This is a seemingly out-of-character book to be published by Something Else Press. However, Gutman intersperces stock tips with comments on the visual and literary arts in his stock-tip letters of the 1960's. Emmett Williams comments on the flap of the dust jacket: "A few years back, the editors of New York's leading financial weekly characterized Walter Gutman as 'the most entertaining man on the Street.' They meant Wall Street, of course, and they had in mind the Gutman Letters, those unorthodox, lyrical stock-market tip sheets of the late 50's and early 60's the likes of which the brokers of Wall Street and their clients had never seen before and probably will never see again. ~ To supplement the letters, there are photographs documenting Gutman's non-Wall Street activities, and in real life these far outweigh his affair with the tickertape. They are the kinds of involvement that may well have cost him a seat on the Exchange: the nude models, the friendship with Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg and Robert Frank that led to the G-String Enterprises production of 'Pull My Daisy'; the double-bubble-bath sequence from the George Kuchar film 'Unstrap Me', in which Gutman stars; and the ever present circus goddesses, female weight-lifters and strongwomen." -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.
