iRiS, 1996
The theme of this work is the Iris flower and most pages depict drawn abstractions of the flower in gray-black colors. The latter is an unexplained contradiction to the purple colors of the flower. The folder enclosing the pamphlets, pages, and drawings is inserted into an enclosure in the rectangular shaped earthy, ceramic vase which has another round enclosure for an artificial Iris flower with its stem. A polaroid photograph depicts the process of how the drawing was made - by rubbing the flower over paper to form the word "Iris" from its pigments. Also designated No.2/Tome 11 in the series ARTCI-BLE Petits Dictionnaires Portatifs. -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.

Tom Phillips writes in his brochure dealing with this series of works that he painted small pictures when he had little time while working on the translating and illustrating of Dante's Inferno. It occurred to him that he could recapture the original impression of a larger space "not by making the works bigger but by making the context in which they were to be viewed smaller." He described the small paintings set into miniature gallery walls as "National Gallery of Lilliput." -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.

The dark, somber, abstract-expressionist thematic forms depicted in the prints are combined with letters & letter-like characters. Based on a prior work of 1952, Opera might have served as a scenic backdrop for the Wagnerian Ring operas. *WEB 1998: Sharon Avery-Fahlström. This silkscreen print is realized in ten panels with wallpaper-like margins which permit an overlapping installation. The concept was to install the work in a continuous line. -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.
