In this book, Horrigan reviews the medical inspections and legislation affecting steerage passengers immigrating to America from Europe 1892-1954 through Ellis Island. The letter-codes of suspected or real illnesses in the immigrants were written in chalk on their lapels. Emily Dickenson's I Saw No Way / Lalou, Frank., 1993
This poem, the first done in English by Lalou, was written with a conventional calligraphic style on the front of the series of the folded paper that formed four unbound pages. In addition, parts of the poem were written in a highly experimental style with vertical elongation and personal flourishes added to the letters.
