Scope and Contents In this thesis, Hilder provides new concepts and arguments about the genesis of concrete poetry backed up by a serious interpretation and collation of published material. He relies heavily on critical texts in three full length books written in English, Liselotte Gumpel's "Concrete Poetry" from East and West Germany (1976), David Seaman's Concrete Poetry in France (1981) and Caroline Bayard's The New Poetics in Canada and Quebec. All are held by the Sackner Archive.Hilder "argues that the critical gaps in concrete poetry criticism, both contemporaneous and subsequent to the concrete poetry movement, have fallen into (1) the national fallacy: the attempt to read an international movement within a national framework; (2) the ancient fallacy: the attempt to link concrete poetry with visual poetry and word imagery dating back to ancient cultures; (3) the theoretical fallacy: the attempt retrospectively to read onto concrete poetry the post-structuralist theories of language that...

Scope and Contents

Bartameu Mari contributed the introductory essay for the exhibition. He wrote that "Nomeda and Gediminas Urbonas have focused their work on grasping and making understandable the layers of meaning in which the psychological effects on society in this voyage-less emigration were lodged. Their methodology echoes the actual postion of the figure of the artist within a system of ingreasingly commercialised exchanges and in opposition to the cross-border homogenisation of aesthetics and discourses." The Urbonas live and work in Lithuania. -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.

 Item
Identifier: CC-44800-46969
Scope and Contents

This work consists nine, unbound, folded prints which contains 68 plates each related to a page of Mallarme's Un Coup de Des. The interpretations are similar in concept to Marcel Broodthaers work (also held by the Sackner Archive) in which each phrase of the poem is cancelled with a solid black rectangle. In Fraenkel's interpretation, from the 1897 Cosmopolis version, the spaces between the cancelled text are reconstructed with hand-drawn markings. In the Schult modification of Fraenkel's presentation, varied colors rather than black are utilized. -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.
