The 1st edition of Water Yam appeared in 1962, the 2nd in 1964, the 3rd in 1972, and a 4th in 1983. This 5th unlimited edition which was unsigned as issued, was signed by Brecht for Francesco Conz who gifted this work to the Sackners. it does not include the booklet entitled NUT BONE present in the 4th edition but has a sealed envelope entitled 'Cloud Scissors' that is not included in the 4th edition. -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.

This book, that has over 2000 well-selected black and white and color illustrations, is divided into three sections. The When section starts in the present and works back to the origins of writing. The Who section names, in alphabetical order, people and institutions that have contributed to typography as designers and inventors, teachers and calligraphers, entrepreneurs and theorists, publishers and artists, and schools and archives.
