The classical image is of a six layer cake; the image of neoclassical is of six stacked drums. In each picture, the sizes of each layer become progressively smaller from botton to top. The cake probably refers to Marie Antoinette's pre-revolutionary statement, "Let Them Eat Cake!" and the drums refer to the French revolution. -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.
Cleaver, 1990
The message on the left reads HOPE, (image of a flame): It's all over in an instant. On the right: (image of a whirlwind), Every action has an opposite and equal reaction, and PERFIDY. The work was received about 10 days prior to Hurricane Andrew, the most devastating natural disaster to the USA in the 20th century, that struck South Florida. The text and images are particularly relevant since the instantaneous destruction to dwellings was attributed in large part to shoddy construction. -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.

Codex Espangliensis / Gomez-Pena, Guillermo ; Chagoya, Enrique ; Rice, Felicia., 2000
The comments on the cover of this trade edition of a limited edition artist collaborative book project follow. " In a series of beautiful and jarring montages, the artists tell of the colonial conquest, cultural transformations, linguistic admixtures and economic interdependence that have formed the Americas...Rice's masterful typographic compositions orchestrate the many voices, weaving texts from Gomez-Pena's performances through and around the visual play of Chagoya's rhetorically sophisiticated collages, offering a critical analysis of border politics through a density of historical references and icons of popular culture."The book is bound like the ancient codex whose pages can be navigated as one continuous extended frieze. -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.
