Hansen has been attending cons since the early 1960s when Star Trek first appeared on television. She had never left Michigan until she found another fan, who was well-travelled, with whom she attended a convention in New York The two of them travelled all over the United States attending conventions, as she says ". . .flying and staying at hotels with strangers who fast became friends."
