This invitation was published for the exhibition on the work of the British poet, Bob Cobbing. The exhibition was curated by Matthew Abess who was the scholar in residence at the Sackner Archive during the summer of 2006 between his sophomore and junior years at the University of Pennsylvania. He also wrote the catalogue essay and organized a symposium at the Kelly Writers House with Maggie O'Sullivan and cris cheek, compatriates of Bob Cobbing, participating in the event along with Charles Bernstein and Marvin Sackner. This catalogue was published for the exhibition of works of Bob Cobbing selected from the Sackner Archive. Reprinted from Stereo Headphones No.5, 1972. The authors debunk the assertion of Stuart Mills who in Akros No.18, 1972 stated that the poem-poster was introduced by Ian-Hamilton Finlay. They go on to further describe the pioneers of Concrete Poetry in their opinion. Rebuttals to their conclusions by Stephan Bann and Henri Chopin are also published. Mentions that Ernest Fenellosa, who died in 1908, used the term 'concrete poetry' in an essay, 'The Chinese Character as a Medium for Poetry' in 1901. -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.

This is a reprinting of the book which was first published in 1965; it is No.15 in the Poets* series. In the introduction, Houedard traces the history of sound poetry through a listing of the chronology of "notable soundpoems" beginning with Lewis Carroll in 1855 and ending with Cobbing in 1965. He also mentions Egyptian hymns 300 B.C. of breath poems consisting of may notes sung to one syllable. Houedard's manuscript for this essay is held by the Sackner Archive. This book was written to accompany Writers Forum Record No.1 by Jandl and Cobbing.
