Designated Studies in Concrete Poetry No.3. Includes sections on definitions, historical statements & manifestos, as well as chronologies of concrete and sound poetry. The book was first compiled in 1971 to coincide with the Stedelijk Museum's exhibition "?Concrete Poetry" but funding could not be obtained for publication. Additions to the book were continued until its publication in 1978. This is the first edition. This is also designated Writers Forum Series Studies in Concrete Poetry Number 3. In addition to examples from international concrete poets, the anthology cites chronologies of visual poetry and sound poetry from 1700 BC to 1978. Includes sections on definitions, historical statements and manifestos, concrete aspects of poetry, sound poetry, semantic poetry, myths of concrete poetry. Examples of poems from about 350 authors are reproduced. GLOUP (GLOUcestershire grouP) signifies name given by Jonathan Williams to group of concrete poets living in the west of England, mainly in Gloustershire, including Dom Sylvester Houedard, John Furnival and Kenhelm Cox. WOUP (Westminster grOUP) is name given by Bob Cobbing and Peter Mayer to group of concrete poets living in London, mainly in the city of Westminster, including Cobbing, Mayer and Tom Edmonds. This anthology presents five works by each the poets. One copy has a yellow papercard cover, the other an orange one with a tear. This collage profile of a stylized human body alludes to multiple physical malfunctions from "bald" to "cough" to "corns" clipped from newspaper ads. The figure is standing on a base which states "Under capitalism...medicine is a commodity and a business. Disease is a commodity of capitalism. Under capitalism, the businesses and institions of capitalism need disease as merchandise to do business with, to make money, to sell medicine. Fidel Castro - January 8, 1969." Reprinted from Stereo Headphones No.5, 1972. The authors debunk the assertion of Stuart Mills who in Akros No.18, 1972 stated that the poem-poster was introduced by Ian-Hamilton Finlay. They go on to further describe the pioneers of Concrete Poetry in their opinion. Rebuttals to their conclusions by Stephan Bann and Henri Chopin are also published.
