General

One of several Washington County farmers who have already made application to place their farms in the Conservation Reserve Program with the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation office is Marion Robertson at right about talking with William Day, manager of the local ASC office. Day and Robertson were talking over the program earlier this week beside a corn field on the 327 acre Robertson farm seven miles south of Washington. Under the program farmers are paid by the government for retiring their land from production. The average rate for a whole farm under a five year contract for Washington County has been established at $22.50 per acre. The farmer must bid his land at a per acre rate less than this established rate and, the lower the bid, the greater is the chance of his farm being accepted in the program. Mr. Day has urged that county farmers interested in the program contact the local ASC office before Sept. 10, the deadline for making application.; With the date for college registration not too far away many local students are beginning preparations for attending the college of their choice. Connie Schumacher, left, and Karen Shalla, right, are two of the 1959 Washington High School graduates who have already begun the task of deciding which things are a necessity for college life and what will have to remain behind. Connie, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leo J. Schumacher, will enroll as a freshman at Iowa State College and Karen, daugther of Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Shalla, will be a first year student at the University of Denver.
