Materials Specific Details
Purchased from Haruko Watanabe in 2021. Paraphrasing from her website: “Odawara chochin made of washi (handmade paper), copper and bamboo strips. The name "Odawara chochin" was invented by Jinemon [Jinzaemon?] in Odawara (now in Kanagawa Prefecture) during Kyoho period (1716~36). These collapsing lanterns are also called "futokoro chochin" because they are carried in the breast (futokoro) or in the sleeves of one’s kimono when going out at night. This one belonged to a physician. The paper part is painted with kakishibu (persimmon juice tannin) to make it waterproof. In excellent condition except for some minor slits in the paper. Meiji period (1868~1912) Diameter:12cm Length with a handle:32cm
