Materials Specific Details
Another fairly rare example of original hibukuro intact, this one with only a few small pin holes and tears. Also rare is its square faced higo (“bones” or internal rings) which one source says added to the Odawara chochin’s strength and durability. They are only 1mm tall on the face and there are 13 of them, fitting snugly and comfortably within the low profile (2.2cm high) small diameter (10.7cm) top and bottom cases. Very lightly used, which may account for its relatively intact condition. Regarding the kanji, Nick Cladis says “The second kanji seems lost in a fold a bit, but I think I got it. It looks like it could be 柴徳 – Shibatatoku, perhaps, or Shibatoku, not sure... Shibatatoku would also have 田 in there, but on a lantern, it would be shortened. Again, a name – likely a family name, for a shop. I found a container-maker (from bamboo, I think), (e.g., for bento boxes) with the name – Shibatoku shouten (shouten being "shop" or "business"). Coincidence?” Pictures below show before and after cleaning. Same pattern/design as #30.
