Materials Specific Details

Appeared to be a good quality lantern with an original hibukuro (fire bag) in very good condition but after arrival, I discovered the inside bottom of the lantern and the lower portion of the paper and bamboo were soaked with wax. How it all got in there is unknown. There seemed to be an original candle wick lying at the bottom of the lantern, as if the candle melted in its entirety. Possibly the lantern was mistakenly left sitting in the hot sun collapsed. The lantern was haphazardly (newly?) attached at the top and bottom using thin metal wires. I cut the hibukuro free and used steam to gradually open the entire assembly. I then used toilet paper and thread to wrap it and placed it in a warm oven for 5 minutes to melt and soak out some of the excess wax in the lower portion of the paper. Repeated with an interior expanding posterboard tube covered with layers of toilet paper plus the same exterior treatment. This drew most of the offending wax away. Reattached the hibukuro with waxed linen thread. Same pattern/design as #24.
