Materials Specific Details
Probably the first lantern Tim Barrett purchased in Japan, at an open-air flea/antique market. Would have been between 1975 and 1977. The simple design and signs of workmanship suggest the top and bottom copper pieces were raised/made entirely by hand; perhaps one of a kind or made in limited quantity. Very nice flush top to bottom fit and guide ring soldered to bottom. Another nice detail is the very unusual keeper that runs from the bottom through the top door and serves to hold the lamp together when not in use. The core Tim assembled of concentric round reed rings fitted with linen threads which run top to bottom in each quarter of the lamp diameter to provide added strength. Finished lantern was treated with kakishibu (fermented persimmon juice) from Imadate in Fukui prefecture, courtesy of Nick Cladis. After market copper chain from a jewelry supply house
