Materials Specific Details

33 rings! All 0.6-0.7mm in diameter higo. Re: #39 and 40 I paid 3300 yen for both, $23.92, June 2025 https://buyee.jp/item/jdirectitems/auction/k1186037912?conversionType=buyee_top_browsing_history

Both were purchased and sent to me by my friend Ryoko Haraguchi and colleagues at Gallery Sind in Tokyo.

#40 appears under D. OTHER, ELSEWHERE and APPENDIX. #39 was made from a rather thick copper and as a result it is heavier than most lanterns of the same size. Possibly because of this, the unusual length, and to help stabilize the expanded lantern, the inside of the top and bottom are fitted with 2 inner attachment points in addition to the 4 normal outer flame bag attachment locations. These two attachment points are probably for internal chains sized to take the strain of the lantern bottom off of the flame bag alone. See internal view. No internal chains were present when #39 joined the collection.
