Scope and Contents
The papers of Rodger Gerberding and Kathleen Jurgens show the breadth and depth of their respective professional careers in the Science fiction, fantasy, and horror realm throughout the 1980s - 2000s. There are three major series in this collection: KATHLEEN JURGENS which inlcudes artist correspondence, manuscripts, publications, SPWAO (the Small Press Writers and Artist's Organization), and her writing and assignments from her time at the University of Iowa as well as a small sampling of awards and articles. GERBERDING AND JURGENS, which includes correspondence, convention materials, articles, and a rich collection of Fantasy and horror magazine and small press publications of which Jurgens was a featured author or editor and Gerberding was a featured illustrator, and a small sampling of personal materials such as the social and cultural events they attended and photographs. Under the series RODGER GERBERDING you will find articles about Gerberding, events held and their promotional materials, correspondence, writings and illustrations as well as art pieces.

Biographical / Historical
Rodger Gerberding is an well regarded illustrator, author, actor, and visual artist in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Gerberding studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Chicago Academy of Fine Art and the Goodman School of Drama. His gallery work has been widely exhibited throughout the united states, in numerous group and one-person shows. He has illustrated over fifty books in a variety of categories and media. Gerberding has illustrated for noteable authors such as August Derleth, Donald Wandrei (one of Gerberding' heroes and the co founder of Arkham Hosue), Poppy Z. Brite, Brian Hodge, Dean Koontz, Fritz Leiber (Science fiction and fantasy writer), and many others. Gerberding's has over a hundred magazine illustration credits to his name inlcuding periodicals such The Horror Show, Weird Tales, Sound Choice, The Chicago Reader. As a writer, Gerberding has published criticism, poetry, and biography in numerous magazines including The Chicago Reader and Tales of the Unanticipated, where Gerberding served as Art Editor. Gerberding has written two books: Some Council Bluff Ghosts in 2000, and From the Earth, a biography of the Wisconsin artist Frank Utpatel in 2004. He published a book of poems, The Ticket Taker at Blue Lake in 2007. Gerberding has been collected by The Art Insitute of Chicago, The Minnesota Historical Society, The August Derleth Society, The University of California/ Fritz Lieber Collection, and privately by the late Patty Duke, Judy Collins, Dick Cavett and Stephen King. Gerberding has taught applied art, creative writing, and drama/improv at Iowa State, Iowa Western Community College, and Community Alliance, in Omaha.
Biographical / Historical
Kathy Jurgens is a dark fantasy and horror fiction author and small press editor well known in the genre's literary and convention cirlces from Council Bluffs, Iowa. Jurgens received her bachelors in liberal arts from The University of Iowa in 1987. As the editor of Thin Ice, a triannual dark fantasy fiction publication, Jurgens does the copy editing, layout, and the contacting of artist. Thin Ice received submissions from all over the world, and cultivated relationships with featured artists and illustrators.In 1992, Jurgens was voted Editor of the year by the Small press Writer's and Artist's Association (of which she was a member) for more than 100 national publications. Jurgens worked for the Council Bluffs school district.
