Content Description
The materials in this collection pertain to Kidder's life with a particular focus on his writing process and the travel and experiences that inspired his writing. Types of materials include some magazines, CDs, cassettes, notebooks, photographs, posters, correspondence, and manuscripts. These materials will help the researcher gain insight into Kidder’s perspective and approach to nonfiction writing.
There are two major series: ELEMENTARY - GRADUATE and PROFESSIONAL PAPERS. Samples of Kidder's early writings, essays, certificates,a sampling of scholastic highlights, and personal correspondence fall under the series ELEMENTARY - GRADUATE.
In the PROFESSIONAL PAPERS series you will find: Articles written by Kidder, a variety of professional correspondence, and correspondence to Kidder from his readers. Research materials, notebooks, transcripts, manuscript drafts, correspondence, reviews, interviews, and ephemera from professional events and signings pertaining to each of Kidder's major works. Professional documents such as early resumes and letters of recommendations are also a part of this series.

Reproductions of materials including scanning, photography, and photocopying are prohibited unless given express permission from donor. Note-taking is permitted.
Biographical / Historical
Tracy Kidder, the Pulitzer prize winning author of The Soul of a New Machine (1982) received his MFA in nonfiction writing from the University of Iowa in 1974 and attended the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. Kidder received his A.B. from Harvard University. He has written several bestselling works of nonfiction including House, Among Schoolchildren, My Detachment, and Mountains Beyond Mountains. Kidder has written for numerous national publications such as The Atlantic, and The New York Times.
