Bread and Water, 1995
Alison Knowles analyzed the cracks on the bottom crusts of her home-made breads and discovered a universe of rivers, Matching each crack in the crust to a river pattern, she created palladium prints with river image, literary passages and text fragments. Commissioned for "The Beauty in Breathing" exhibition. The bottom half is the same scene rendered in the repeated words brisa (breeze), abatido (downcast), abismo (abyss), abajo (under), barato (cheap), alejar (move away) - themes related to suicide. Carbon Drawings, 1998
This book consists of a sample of 42 drawings done with the aid of with carbon paper copying sheets. They were based upon images and fragments of words from Italian fashion magazines. Baroni comments, "There is an element of child-like surprise every time you lift the funny smelling carbon sheet to see the result of your work. You can never be quite sure what will appear." Andre reports to the Sackners that an exhibition of all of his remaining poetry, about 800 pages, will open in Paula Cooper's gallery on September10,1993. He writes, "I would consider it a great honor if it would be possible for you to visit the show before the opening date. There simply are no people in North America whose opinion I would value so highly."
