The Porthole, 2011

 Item
Identifier: CC-59600-10002678
Scope and Contents

Amazon.com: Recipient of the 1966 "Ferro di Cavallo" prize for a first novel, THE PORTHOLE was a highly praised and controversial debut. Pulling together diverse elements from the musical experiments of Cage, Schnebel and Kagel, the pictorial innovations of assemblage and pop art, x-rated comics, and dialogue from horror and World War II films, Spatola liberated his narrative from the stultifying edifice of Italian prose. The Porthole remains even more important today for its remarkable achievement in that fertile period of experimental literature. -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.

The Selected Works of T.S. Spivet / Larsen, Reif., 2009

 Item
Identifier: CC-50231-71297
Scope and Contents Amazon.com reviewer. "When I write my reviews, I often include references to other books that link to the one I've just read, whether thematically or chronologically or theoretically or spiritually or even just randomly--but for "The Selected Works of T. S. Spivet" I'm not sure I can even randomly select a work that links to it. Unique and ambitious, Reif Larsen's debut isn't a classic, but its nicely done. Tecumseh (family name adopted four generations earlier by his Finnish immigrant ancestor) Sparrow (named for the sparrow that crashed into the window of his birthing room) is a 12-year-old boy born on a Montana ranch to his gruff cowboy father and scientist mother in search of a phantom beetle. T. S. is a normal boy--except he always calls his mother Dr. Clair, he hardly ever talks to his father (well, strike that, that could be considered normal 12-year-old-boy-behavior)-and he is an accomplished and published technical artist and cartographer. When he receives a call from the...

While on a trip to Morocco, Lydia notices a small mark on her hand which begins to grow and spread in thin, tattooed lines that only she can see. Eventually, the marks reveal themselves to be a detailed map of an unknown land, and Lydia begins to understand that these marks, invisible to all but herself and a mysterious Moroccan man named Layesh, will lead her on a strange and perilous journey. The Tattooed Map is Lydia's journal of the days and weeks leading up to her disappearance. Each page contains her daily experiences--her growing shock and fear as the map unfolds itself, her deteriorating relationship with Christopher,...

The Tenant / Topor, Roland ; Francis K. Price, translator., 2006

 Item
Identifier: CC-52690-73826
Scope and Contents This edition includes an introduction to "The Tenant" by Thoms Ligotti, the Kafka-ish novel itself, four short stories and reproductions of nine surealistic drawing.J from NY Amazon.com: Roland Topor's "The Tenant" is nothing if not original; the author impresses his nightmarish worldview without leaving us a moment to draw breath, and as we read deeper and deeper into the tragic tale of M. Trelkovsky we can't help but share his vision, at least for the duration of the novel. I've long been a fan of the 1976 Roman Polanski film and often wondered why it was so obscure. After reading Topor's novel, I had to appreciate how beautifully Polanski translated this very complex and disturbing work to the screen. Comparing it with the movie you realize Polanski left out only what he absolutely had to, and that wasn't much. At the outset it seems that Trelkovsky is an average joe who lives in a world of material necessity, habitual discourtesy from others, and bullies. Actually I think this...

the transformations of mr. hadliz, 2002

 Item
Identifier: CC-58350-10001566
Scope and Contents

Amazon.com: combination of poetry, prose, and graphic art from a Czech Surrealist who once painted the surface of a frozen lake. The twelve full-color pictures that form the book's central motif are from a 1976 Danish calendar and executed by froissage, a particular method invented by Novak of interpreting the lines formed by crumpling TC. The text to the art was written overnight in the spirit of automatism, and, again sixteen years later. The volume also includes poems from Novak's alter ego, Mr. Hadliz, as well as a conversation between the author and his subject. -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.

Scope and Contents This novel deals with self-revelations of an American academic who is trying to write an introduction for a book that he has just completed, "Guilt and Innocence in Hutler's Germany." The book can be opened to almost any page and read as fragments of self-contained poetry. It has many Joycean elements in its presentation.Reviews in Dalkey Archive at their Web site:by H. L. HixWilliam H. Gass's The Tunnel, whatever its virtues, is not an inviting book. Even a reader willing to endure its length and its narrator's unrelenting bitterness must overcome its subordination of plot to other concerns: the book does not proceed from a to b along a "straight line" of narrative or exposition, revealing all relevant information before or as it is needed, but moves in a less ordered (or differently ordered) way that its author conceives as a more accurate replication of human consciousness. Its releasing and withholding information with little regard for plot means that The Tunnel offers more to...

The letters are from Danielewski's monumental novel, "House of Leaves," published as a separate work that demonstrates a mother's love for her son. The letters are written by the fictional character, Pelatina H. Lieve to her son Johnny Truant. The typography changes and fluctates as the mental status of Pelatina deteriorates.
