Scope and Contents Semiotic fantasy novel by Italo Calvino, published in Italian in 1973 as Il castello dei destini incrociati. It consists of a series of short tales gathered into two sections, The Castle of Crossed Destinies and The Tavern of Crossed Destinies. The novel concerns two groups of travelers through a forest, both of which have lost the power to speak as the result of traumatic events. One group is spending the night in a tavern, the other in a castle. In each place, the travelers tell the stories of their lives, using tarot cards instead of words. A narrator at each place interprets the cards for the reader, but since the tarot cards are subject to multiple interpretations, the stories the narrators offer are not necessarily the stories intended by the mute storytellers. Commissioned for "The Beauty in Breathing" exhibition. The book is a narrative story about a woman who has a break-up of a love affair. Each page has polaroid photographs depicting punctuated, typewritten text or images collaged over phrases accompl with automatic writing. The typed text of the photographs alludes to aspects of breathing, e.g. to escape she began to breathe deeply, with each measured breath, deliberately exhaled, the pace of her breathing, she sighed deeply loudly exhaled etc. -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.

This book reproduces Chagall's original 43 gouaches for illustrating the fables by Jean La Fontaine. Although there were 100 fables and gouaches by Chagall, 57 were lost or destroyed in the years after their creation in 1926 - 1927. The exhibition was held in the Musee d'Art Moderne de Ceret and the Musee National Message Biblique Marc Chagall in Nice in 1995.
