The introduction indicates that the theme of this book is the idea of constant change, particularly on how to write text which requires typographic change throughout each section of the book. In addition to a section contributed by each of the six participants, there are five pop-up pages spaced throughout the book which reflect a collaborative text on the theme of dream versus reality. Such topics as color and emotion, and insomnia are explored. Scope and Contents The aim of this book was to first enunciate the rules of typography and then to break one of these rules in such a manner that the copy is not compromised; i.e., to write or find texts that might actually require the breaking of rules for enhanced meaning. These rules have arisen from such practical reasons as readability, legibility and clarity of ordering, e.g., where paragraphs start. They are listed in three introductory pages. For example, 1) A capital letter begins a sentence; when enlarged, it aligns with the base of a line of type, 2) Word spacing is equal to the width of an i, or one-fourth of an em, etc. Each of the nine contributors then contributed two pages, the first a statement documenting the use of a rule, the second an example of violating the rule in a successful way. This book was written and designed by the Scripps College typography class under the direction of Kitty Maryatt. The project was to make "Chinese" (in this case Western) spirit papers from handmade paper with the students adding elements to the pulp as a way to insert small poignant messages each wrote for this project.
